As soon as Halloween was over I erased the Halloween pumpkin from my dry erase board in the garage. I replaced it with a faceless pumpkin and the verse, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18 That verse mades me nervous, since I am often not at all thankful for what is going on in my life. I even went to the trouble of rationalizing away the meaning, by explaining that it doesn’t say, “Give thanks FOR everything” – it says, “Give thanks IN everything.”

But that doesn’t help much when you keep reading the verse. It stares you in the face and says plainly, “This is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” God, did you have to make me sick, make me lose a child, make me lose a friend…you name it…we all have stuff. And now we can blame it on God, because the verse says, “This is the will of God.”

The last three weeks God has tested me. I think it was his will that I put that verse up on that wall. I pull in the garage, generally not happy about something. Then I stare at that verse, and the pumpkin without a face – no smile, no grin, nothing – empty.

But what’s inside a pumpkin? Good seeds ready to produce more pumpkins. Good flesh ready to make delicious pumpkin pies or pumpkin soup!

What’s inside my heartache? Thank you, God, for what you have planned for me. You gave your only Son, allowed him to suffer and die for me. Everything good has come out of that sacrifice. Now I know there will be a resurrection for me born out of suffering.

Give Thanks by K. Smith

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son

And now let the weak say, “I am strong”

Let the poor say, “I am rich

Because of what the Lord has done for us”

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son

Give thanks.
